Hi folks, as some of you know we have quite a few breeds of pigs on our farm here like the American Guinea hogs, KuneKunes, Julianas, pot bellies. We're adding new breeds all the time. Our journey began with wanting a few pigs to feed ourselves. That quickly turned to an education obsession after getting swindled on a "DEAL" for 6 pigs we bought that ended up being a totally different breed than we thought when we bought them. I turned my time and attention to learning all about swine and the many various breeds and what they're each good for. I now give classes here on the farm to show people what different breeds actually look like, their conformation, breeding history etc.
We have decided to focus our farm on heritage breeds and lard breeds. Our goals now include becoming the LARD BREED Swine specialists for southern California. We currently raise and breed several lard breeds. We recently added Berkshires to the farm & around the end of October we are welcoming Gloucester Old Spot Pigs to the farm. Hopefully by spring we will also have the infamous Mieshan Pigs here as well!
That way when a local homesteader or farmer wants to really choose between what breeds are best for their family, they can come and learn first hand about each breed in person and make a more informed decision than just watching videos and taking someones word for it. We all have different things we want from our pigs and every breed is good for different uses. Our goal in focusing on lard breeds is to not only bring back the forgotten breeds of yore, but to educate people on why lard breeds need to make a comeback!
Join us on our journey as we bring more forgotten breeds back to america and Homesteading overall!
